Sun and Virtual Learning Labs supported the University of Zurich's ambitious ShanghAI Lectures in building a 3D virtual learning world based on the Project Wonderland open source toolkit. The lectures take place in a mixed reality setting, combining video streaming and virtual worlds, to enable students worldwide to actively participate in presentations and lectures on embodied intelligence and biologically inspired robotics.

MiRTLE Technical Report now available
The Sun Research funded MiRTLE project (Mixed Reality Teaching and Learning) technical report is now available online. This project was carried out by the University of Essex - one of the key research partners of Virtual Learning Labs.

How to setup MiRTLE on Wonderblog

This is a fairly technical process but hopefully breaks down the install into fairly easy to follow steps. Although the examples given are for the OpenSolaris operating system, it will fairly easy to adapt these to other platforms, such as Linux.

VLL at London Immersion Event
Virtual Learning Labs will be represented by Michael Gardner and Ken Miller at the Immersive Education Initiative London Summit from April 23rd to 24th 2009 - see http://mediagrid.org/summit/. Michael will be presenting the work done on the MiRTLE (Mixed Reality Learning and Teaching) project on day 1. On day 2 he will be running a more practical session around how Virtual Learning Labs can help you. This will be in conjunction with Bernard Horan from Sun microsystems.
